London D & D London, the group behind restaurants such as Alcazar in Paris, Guastavino’s in New York and Le Pont de la Tour in London, is to open its first hotel on Monday. South Place Hotel, close to Finsbury Circus in the City of London, will have 80 Conran-designed bedrooms but also hopes to attract non-residents with a greater emphasis on catering than conventional hotels. There will be three bars and two restaurants, including Angler, which specialises in seafood and is overseen by Tony Fleming, formerly executive chef at One Aldwych. The restaurant, on the seventh floor, will also have a rooftop terrace with views over the City. “South Place is a hotel created by restaurateurs,” says Bruce Robertson, the general manager. “It is as much about meet-and-eat as sleep.” Introductory double room rates start at £180. www.southplacehotel.com

Oslo The Norwegian capital is gearing up for the big opening of the year – the launch on September 29 of a new art museum designed by Renzo Piano, the architect behind London’s Shard. Built at a cost of Nkr650m (£70m), the privately owned Astrup Fearnley museum consists of a curved glass roof covering two buildings: one for visiting exhibitions, the other for a permanent collection of contemporary art, including work by artists such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Charles Ray and Cindy Sherman. Together the galleries have some 7,000 sq m of exhibition space, and the waterfront museum also has an outdoor sculpture park and beach. The opening is a milestone in the development of the Tjuvholmen district, a former shipyard that is becoming a centre for architecture, design, art and food. www.afmuseet.no

Aspen Four of the most celebrated ski resorts in the US have collaborated to launch a new joint lift pass for this winter. The Mountain Collective pass covers Alta in Utah, Aspen in Colorado, Jackson Hole in Wyoming and Squaw Valley, California. The pass costs $349 and gives two free days at each of the resorts, then a 50 per cent discount on subsequent days as well as reductions on accommodation. It is the first time the resorts, normally seen as competitors, have worked together on such an initiative. Meanwhile Breckenridge, Colorado, has announced it will expand its terrain by 23 per cent, after receiving permission from the US Forest Service to build new lifts in time for the 2013/2014 season. www.themountaincollective.com
