Stephen Carter, chairman of governors at Ashridge Business School in the UK, has been appointed to the new post of chief of strategy and principal advisor to the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

Mr Carter, 43, will be in charge of political strategy, communications and research at 10 Downing Street, as well as the Policy Unit, and he will report directly to the Prime Minister. Mr Carter will retain his role at Ashridge though he has resigned his position as chief executive of Brunswick Group, the corporate communications group, and several non-executive jobs.

Mr Carter was appointed as a governor of Ashridge in April 2005 and appointed chairman just six months ago, in July 2007.
