Terence Blanchard: Magnetic

Strong themes establish setting and mood and each musician’s personality becomes as tangible as a character in a play

Terence Blanchard’s absorbing showcase for his muscular and sensitive working quintet unfolds like the atmospheric film scores the trumpeter crafts for Spike Lee.

Strong themes establish setting and mood and, as the action unfolds, each musician’s personality becomes as tangible as a character in a play. Even keyboardist Fabian Almazan’s solo spot is a genre-crossing panorama.

“Don’t Run” builds tension over walking bass – a masterclass appearance from Ron Carter – and guest saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and guitarist Lionel Loueke add new dimensions without interrupting the flow.
