Maleficent is awful. Can you be arrested for making simpering fantasy-whimsies in the name of Disney? Angelina Jolie as a good/wicked fairy godmother strikes tedious, interminable poses with her axe-edged cheekbones and deranged designer wardrobe. The scenery and costumes drip with kitsch. The director Robert Stromberg has previously been a production designer, so all is explained, if not excused. The story, roughly, is Sleeping Beauty. My advice to the Charles Perrault estate: don’t sue, just ignore.
