Steve Gadd is the in-demand drum-session maestro who invented the poised, perfectly timed, stripped-back grooves that fuelled fusion jazz in the 70s.

Recent forays into band leadership include a brace of jaunty bar room bashes, but this soulful and sensitive quintet album, featuring fellow members of singer/songwriter James Taylor’s backing band, mellows with every listen. Gadd locks into the bass and makes every swish and ping count, organist Larry Goldings delivers a compendium of the blues, enhanced by moody, bittersweet atmospherics from trumpet and guitar.
