Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) is fresh from drug-related rehab and has swapped Baker Street for Brooklyn; his sober companion is Dr Joan Watson (Lucy Liu), a woman with sharp deductive skills of her own.

It is easy to accuse Elementary of piggybacking on a fan base for Conan Doyle’s sleuth revived by the BBC’s over-polished Sherlock, but efforts to maintain distance pay off, particularly for Lee Miller in a stubbly yet sensitive re-imagining of the scrupulously logical detective (this Holmes is no action hero). In this lengthy 24-episode CBS debut season devilishly accurate intuition rightfully reigns over hightech trickery.
