Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London, has collaborated for the first time with a business school, teaching management students the business of art and the fine art market.
The students, from Audencia Nantes School of Management in France are studying for the masters in the management of cultural institutions. And as well as spending one week in London, they will also spend a study period in Bibao, Spain, where they will study the success of the city’s cultural initiatives, in particular the Guggenheim museum of modern art.
At Sotheby’s the students cover aspects from the institute’s MA in art business, including an analysis of the art market, ethical issues, marketing and legal topics. The students also visited galleries, museums and auction houses.
The partnership is a three year agreement and will include research projects and faculty exchange.
Catherine Morel, arts marketing lecturer, says that cultural management is becoming more sophisticated and there is growing demand for qualifications.
Sotheby’s started as a training institute for Sotheby’s auctioneers and today offers
six MA programmes in London - art business, photography, fine and decorative art, east Asian art, contemporary art and contemporary design. The degrees are accredited by Manchester University.
