Dallas Buyers Club - DVD cover

Jean-Marc Vallée, 2013

Universal

McConaughey’s Oscar-winning performance as real-life Aids-sufferer Ron Woodroof revealed that all along, underneath the Hollywood hunk disguise, was not only a skinnymalink, but also an oddball with a beautiful soul just waiting for a part like this. His Woodroof is a quirkily charismatic, gambling cowboy, who refuses to give up, or be pumped full of cell-annihilating drugs. With the help of a fellow-suffering transvestite (Jared Leto, exquisite) he strikes out on his own, sources more effective (yet not FDA-approved) drugs, and sets up a lucrative Buyers Club. An utterly engaging film about hope and determination.
