In a World ... – DVD review

A voiceover legend is reluctant to leave the field to make way for the next generation

Lake Bell, 2013

“In a wurrrrrld ... ” and so begins the classic voiceover to a thousand American movie trailers. But who is the man behind that voice? And why does it always have to be a man?

These are questions resolved in Lake Bell’s quirky film about this surprisingly cut-throat profession characterised by large egos, endless warbling warm-ups and lengthy steam sessions. Bell plays Carol, whose father Sam (Fred Melamed) is a voiceover legend but is reluctant to leave the field to make way for the next generation, let alone to allow for Carol’s chance rise to trailer fame.
