The idiosyncratically downbeat guitarist’s latest trio picks and plunks incisively through a set of mordant originals and quirky covers.
The title track and “Tea for Two” conjure surreal tea dances, there’s a bendy “Goin’ out of My Head” and a disconcertingly jolly “Benny’s Bugle”. Frisell’s originals are darker hued and reference everyday anxieties – “Love Sick”, “Baby Cry” and “All We Can Do” typify his succinct titles.
Eyvind Kang wistfully weaves focussed viola with Frisell’s trademark Americana, Rudy Royston provides sparse drum accompaniment and Frisell orchestrates with a producer’s precision. Magical!
