George Yip to stand down as dean at RSM Erasmus

The Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University is to begin its search for a new dean, following the decision by George Yip to stand down in June 2011, at the age of 64. He will have been dean at the school for just three and a half years.

The increasing pressures on deans in European business schools, often from their own faculty, mean that many are quitting after just two or three years into the job. John Wells was dean at IMD for just over two years, while Robin Buchanan, who stepped down at London Business School in January 2009, lasted just 16 months. Even Frank Brown will have been dean at Insead for less than the customary five years when Dipak Jain takes up the reins in March 2011.

A marketing and strategy specialist, Prof Yip worked at London Business School and the Judge school at Cambridge in the UK, and the Anderson school at UCLA in the US, before joining RSM. He says he is now “very much looking forward to spending time with my (his) wife and family”.

A short list of potential candidates for the new job will be drawn up by the end of 2010, according to the school, suggesting that an internal university candidate might well be the next dean.
