Slab-sided Volvos, a snippet of Abba and lots of brown – yes, it’s Sweden in 1976. But it’s Sweden’s dark side (Wallander-style) in this dramatisation of a scandal in which ministers were supplied with girls as young as 14.
Their procuring madam (Pernilla August) acts like the mother the girls don’t have, but turns nasty if they want out. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema reprises the murky palette of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The result is seedy and disquieting, but loses its way as it flits between thriller and gritty exposé of sexual exploitation.
