There’s nothing very anxious about Old Fears: in fact it’s a delight. Made by David Brewis, a member of Sunderland indie band Field Music, it lopes by to a restrained but appealing groove, evoking a less frenetic version of St Vincent’s obliquely catchy art-funk on “Dress Up” and conjuring the quirky charm of Metronomy’s English Riviera on “A Smile Cracks”.
Singing with a gentle high voice, Brewis returns repeatedly to the theme of memory and time – not a grand Proustian affair but fleeting snapshots of youth, like the “photographs set against a mirror” in “So Much Time”.
