John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension: The Boston Record

A crunchy riff, pounding stadium drums and the leader’s vibrant lead guitar instantly conjure the glory days of jazz-rock fusion of the ’70s when McLaughlin hit the big time leading the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

He still crams impossible numbers of notes into incredibly tight corners, ramps up the volume and demands speed, power and control from his band.

Bassist Etienne M’Bappe, drummer Ranjit Barot and Gary Husband on keyboards deliver all three, and then some, and, on this exciting and impassioned live recording, make established practices sound fresh-minted.
