This film of Giulini (1914-2005) was made in 1997, towards the end of the revered Italian maestro’s career.

Giulini did not conduct Bruckner until 1975. Thereafter the symphonies became an important part of his repertoire. His performances were notable not just for their solemnity, but also for their subtlety and lyrical expressiveness: “just the notes, not too emotional or extravagant” is his injunction at the end of the rehearsal of the Ninth Symphony.

As this DVD makes clear, Giulini could express himself clearly in German. The tone was always supportive, never pedantic, and the orchestra had ample opportunity to play – “singing” is a word that crops up frequently.

But what comes across most, in concert as in rehearsal, is his love of music and respect for fellow musicians.
