The line-up: retro kitchenware

Falcon enamelware dishes

The tastefully scuffed enamelware dish is a common trope of hip restaurants in London – usually filled with an equally nostalgic dish such as cottage pie or apple crumble. British brand Falcon, established in 1920 and purveyor of the “ice white” tins with blue trim, is enjoying a revival thanks to this trend. There are sleek new sets for baking, preparing and drinking, with red and grey alternative finishes. From £4.99

Mengsel tea towels

The moka express maker, with its distinctive graphic shape, is an enduring icon of the Italian coffee hour. Here its image is strikingly reproduced via a screen print on to cotton tea towels, sold in pairs in red and black. Silkscreen poster-size moka prints are also available. Luzelle van der Westhuizen, its founder, is from Cape Town but has her studio in London; mengsel means mixture in Afrikaans and Dutch. £16, for two, www.mengsel.com

Corin Mellor trays

Corin Mellor trays

The classic canteen tray, remembered from school dinners and office refectories, is stylishly updated by designer Corin Mellor (son of David Mellor and now creative director of the design company) in willow plywood, with a “hand-finished” melamine coating. Beige-brown was the regulation colour for the old-school trays; these come in a vibrant green, navy, black and white. £29.50, www.davidmellordesign.com
