After their outstanding Ravel recital disc, Gubisch and Altinoglu explore the folk-inspired work of five classical composers spanning a century.
Gubisch’s smoky mezzo is better suited to the earthiness of Spanish tradition than to three Brahms songs included here, but she triumphs in the 11 multi-ethnic songs Berio recomposed for Cathy Berberian (accompanied by small ensemble).
What comes through is Gubisch’s identification with the sadness and joy of the sentiments expressed, so that you feel she is giving you a direct link to each composer’s inspiration – transcending the distinction between folk and classical in a manner few classically trained musicians achieve.
