Duke Ellington: Meets Coleman Hawkins/And John Coltrane

A terrific re-issue that combines the pianist’s classic small group

This terrific re-issue combines a classic Ellington small-group album featuring the founding father of jazz saxophone with a highlight of the Coltrane discography – the Duke’s rippling motif behind the saxophonist’s imperious upward sweep on “In a Sentimental Mood” is timeless.

Both albums are packed with detail and are emotionally charged throughout. One of 29 “doubles” released to celebrate Impulse records’ 50th, including equally iconic Mingus and the Joy of Sax featuring the late Sonny Criss.
