ENI, the Italian energy group, would be the best suitor for Petrol, the listed Slovenian oil and gas group, said Marko Kryzanowski, Petrol’s chairman. Although he stated that the acquisition of a majority stake in Petrol would be impossible for bidders like Poland’s PKN Orlen, Russia’s Lukoil or Hungary’s MOLL, Kryzanowski said ENI would be ”the most compatible company” with Petrol.

An ENI spokesperson said the company declined all comment on the matter. Kryzanowski also added that the two companies had been having informal talks, but nothing had come out yet.

Kryzanowski also said that Petrol would be interested in acquiring the 25% stake available in Rompetrol, and that Petrol has already held talks with Rompetrol’s owner Dinu Patriciu. A spokesperson at Rompetrol Group, the Netherlands-based oil company, declined to comment on Kryzanowski’s statement.

Separately, Kryzanowski also confirmed that Petrol is very interested in acquiring Italian oil refinery Italiana Energia e Serivizi [IES].

.”We have been assessing IES for some time, we are one of its best customers so we would like to buy it,” said Kryzanowski.

He said IES might see a drop in its EBITDA this year, which, he added, could be the right time to buy it.

IES’ sale is being advised by Morgan Stanley and Kryzanowski valued IES at around EUR 800m. Petrol expects sales worth EUR 1.95bn this year, up 2% from last year, as posted on its website.

Krzanowski spoke with Mergermarket in an exclusive interview during a recent Economist conference in Bled, Slovenia
