The University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management has announced that its long-standing dean, Roger Martin, will be stepping aside in June 2013.

Prof Martin will move to a leadership position within the school’s Martin Prosperity Institute, a think tank looking at holistic approaches to evaluating human well-being.

The annoucement comes amid a state of flux among Canadian business schools. Carol Stephenson, dean of the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School, will also be stepping down next summer, potentially placing two of Canada’s top schools in direct competition for new leadership.

Prof Martin’s legacy will include the inculcation of integrative thinking – a focus of the former management consultant’s research – across the Rotman School’s curricula.

“My concern for business education is its preoccupation with compromise”, Prof Martin told the FT last month. “By engaging with the complexities involved in solving business problems, [integrative thinking] allows their creative resolution.”

Since joining the school as dean in 1998, Prof Martin has overseen a significant broadening of the school’s spectrum of programmes, including the launch of Morning MBA and Masters in Finance degrees, as well as an EMBA jointly taught with the University of St Gallen, Switzerland. Following the opening of a new building last month, the school has more than doubled in physical size.

Throughout Prof Martin’s tenure, the school’s full-time MBA has remained within the top 50 ranked programmes in the world. This week, the Rotman one-year EMBA was ranked 29 globally in the FT Executive MBA Ranking 2012, two places below Canada’s highest ranked programme, the Kellogg-Schulich EMBA.

In contrast to its peers, York University’s Schulich School of Business reappointed its dean, Dezsö Horváth, this June for a ground-breaking sixth term at the helm of the school he has led since 1988.

Recent months have seen a change of leadership at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business, as well as the announcement that Leonard Waverman, current dean of the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School, will be assuming the leadership of McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business in early 2013.
