Rendezvous Suite

4 stars

The central theme of the episodic, tightly-argued three-movement Rendezvous Suite is the nature of dream. The mysteries of sleep get a look in, but the keynote tracks reference hopes and hopes reigned in – Amiri Baraka’s low-key rap “Yes We Can” more resigned than angry.

Murray is a warm lead on saxophone and bass clarinet, curling seductively into controlled phonics and main composer Tacuma underpins with trenchant, pitch-wandering and funky bass guitar. Murray’s son Mingus is fleet-fingered and rough-edged guitar support.
