This image is by Chinese photographer Chen Jiagang, born in 1962, who returned to his childhood landscape in Hubei province to document the area’s changes since the building of the Three Gorges Dam between 2006 and 2009, a project that became mired in controversy.
“I noticed that the fog over the Three Gorges Reservoir was growing denser,” says Jiagang, who was a celebrated architect before becoming a photographer. “One reason is the changes in the overall climate of the area since the construction of the dam. Another reason is the dust that is left over after the human plundering of resources.”
Five photographs from his Great Three Gorges series are on show at the Edwyn Houk Gallery in Zurich until May 3.
