A top sommelier in your cellar

Nicholas Lander previews the auction for top sommeliers

Do you really know what is in your cellar? For one night only, six eminent sommeliers will be available to inspect your wine collection. Emily O’Hare from the River Café; João Pires from Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park; Xavier Rousset from 28-50; Ronan Sayburn, Head of Wines for the Dorchester Collection; Matt Wilkin, Master Sommelier and consultant; and John Ragan, Wine Director for the Union Square Hospitality Group in New York – have agreed to be auctioned and to put their expertise at your disposal in your home.

In return for the highest bid, six FT readers will be able to discuss which wines from their cellar are to be served over a dinner. These sommeliers will help you select the bottles; decant and serve the wines; explain and educate; and make your dinner an unforgettable experience.

The sommeliers are prepared to travel, by mutual arrangement, but expenses are to be paid by the host.

The sommelier line-up

Emily O’Hare

O’Hare’s vinous knowledge will be enhanced by the presence of a chef from the River Café who will cook your dinner while she pours the wines. What a combination!

João Pires

Portuguese-born and currently at Dinner by Heston, Pires has vast experience of selling the world’s top wines, as many of London’s restaurant-goers will have appreciated. The bottle he most wants to taste is Château d’Yquem 1859.

Xavier Rousset

Founder of Texture and 28-50, Rousset is so keen on wine he would unsurprisingly like to find a bottle of mature Burgundy or champagne under his Christmas tree.

Matt Wilkin

Australia’s first Master Sommelier, Wilkin specialises in the Loire, Rhone and Burgundy but is very keen to get his hands on a bottle of The Macallan Cask 627 1952 Highlands Speyside Whisky.

Ronan Sayburn

Smart and sexy (well, that’s how he describes himself!), Sayburn dreams of the opportunity to taste Cheval Blanc ’47, Margaux 1900 or Petrus 1961. Again.

John Ragan

Wine guru for Gramercy Park, The Modern and Union Square Café, New York, Ragan is always happy to open any good bottle but he will come running for an old vintage of Raveneau Chablis.
