Saxophone Summit: Visitation – review

The three major-league saxophonists who combine under the name Saxophone Summit eschew aggressive cutting contests to explore the saxophone’s rich and subtle sonorities.

Each saxophonist has a strong personal voice – Joe Lovano gruff and bearlike; Ravi Coltrane focused and spiritual; Dave Liebman meteoric and clean – and when combined they form a panoply of warm harmonies, dense textures and supersensitive improv. There are lovely solos too, a sensitive pianist, Phil Markowitz and the uber-experienced rhythm section of Cecil McBee and Billy Hart on bass and drums.
