Snapshot: ‘No more stars’ (2010), by Rä di Martino

Deep in the Tunisian desert, this wooden structure hides a surprising past. The unremarkable and decrepit shelter is an abandoned Star Wars film set. While George Lucas’s galactic world has remained constant in the minds of sci-fi fans, the eerie reality of its architecture is conveyed in Rä di Martino’s photographs of structures that rear out of the sand like historical ruins before dissolving into fiction.

Born in Italy in 1975, di Martino studied in London at the Chelsea College of Art and the Slade before moving to New York in 2005. Her work has been shown at MoMA PS1 in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome.

Next week, it will be shown in London by Tryon Street Gallery as part of the London Art Fair, January 15-19.
