Restless Creature, Royal Opera House, London
The illustrious American ballerina Wendy Whelan, a long-time star of New York City Ballet and an artist of vivid intelligence, comes to the Linbury Studio Theatre for five performance in which she will dance a set of duets devised by four American choreographers; Kyle Abraham, Joshua Beamish, Brian Brooks, Alejandro Cerrudo her collaborators.

Romeo and Juliet, Royal Albert Hall, London
There is something of a balletic lull in the next few weeks before the burst of grand activity from the Mariinsky Ballet at Covent Garden in late July and early August. Certain offerings I omit as being, in my view, tedious or damaging to the sensibilities as well as the pocket. The Royal Albert Hall hosts Romeo and Juliet with staging and choreography by Derek Deane. Sweeping effects and that score!

Coppélia, Coliseum, London
In mid-July, English National Ballet moves to the Coliseum for a brief season of Coppélia. The happy production is by Ronald Hynd, the Delibes score is a miracle of charm and wit, and the fine Danish danseur Alban Lendorf will appear for a couple of performances (on July 24 and 26) as the errant hero Frantz.

Nicolas le Riche, Paris Opera
Another superb dancer, Nicolas Le Riche of the Paris Opéra Ballet, makes an official farewell appearance at the Palais Garnier on July 9. I think him an artist of rarest sensibilities and superlative technical resource, and I count myself singularly fortunate to have seen his performances for more than 20 years. Tickets are hen’s-teeth-ish: but you can try.
