Tesco, the UK retailer, is planning to open hundreds of small supermarkets in southern California, Arizona, and Nevada. The first stores, on sites of around 15,000 sq ft with 10,000 sq ft of selling space, will open on November 8. The sites range from upmarket locations such as Manhattan Beach to the inner city of Los Angeles (click here for story).
Tesco has also begun to sign leases for sites in San Jose, Sacramento and Oakland as well as in central California and around Reno, Nevada.
Tesco has opened a US headquarters in El Segundo, near Los Angeles airport. It is also building a distribution centre on an 88 acre site at a former US airforce base at Moreno Valley in Riverside County, which will be powered in part by solar energy (click here for story).
It has also unveiled a green Fresh & Easy logo around which it will seek to build its US brand (click here for story).
Two of its leading British suppliers, Nature’s Way Foods and 2 Sisters Food Group, are also planning establish US operations to suppy Tesco, to supply fresh salads and pasta dishes, and prepared poultry (click here for story).
Nature’s Way has set up a US company, Wild Rocket Foods, and is working with Betteravia Farms, a grower with farms in California and Arizona that is part of the Bonipak group and with Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo, an organic producer that imports from a cooperative in Mexico’s Baja peninsula. In March, Wild Rocket announced it was abandoning a plan to build a facility next to Tesco’s distribution centre, citing unexectedly high water-supply costs, but said it would use a site elsewhere in Riverside County.
Tesco has also hired Deutsch, part of the Interpublic Group, as its US adverstising agency.
The retailer has said it plans to open 250 stores by the end of 2008. The Financial Times has so far identified almost 150 planned locations from public documents including liquor licence applications and planning reports, as well as from Tesco:
