Michael Winterbottom, 2013
Studiocanal
Or, Sex and Drugs and Property: Winterbottom’s latest collaboration with Steve Coogan is a biopic of Paul Raymond, owner of large swaths of Soho, cocaine-user and purveyor of porn – sorry, erotica – to the masses.
It’s a sad story, as Raymond, an oddly elusive charmer in Coogan’s reading, fails to keep his beloved daughter (a brilliantly brittle Imogen Poots) from going fatally astray, but there’s a lot of rude fun on the way; money can’t buy you everything but it sure can keep boredom at bay for a long time.
