Meet Cao — a migrant worker who makes a living from the detritus of the city

“Shanghai is fabulous, it is so fabulous,” says bright-eyed, 47-year-old Cao, who, like many millions of others, arrived in one of China’s urban centres from the poorer provinces to try to make a better living. “When I came to Shanghai I had no choice but to become a trashpicker”, she says.
