Bend sofa for B and B Italia
Car interior for Kvadrat and BMW
It being B and B Italia’s 1,000th product, Patricia Urquiola’s sofa naturally recalls the company’s very first sofa – the Coronado by Afra & Tobia Scarpa from 1966. Urquiola has also been commissioned by Kvadrat and BMW to create a new installation: “Dwelling Lab”. Textile is the fundamental material at play here as a car’s interior is clad in various fabrics developed by Kvadrat.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec
Lighthouse lamp for Established & Sons
Stool and tables for Magis
Following on from their Quilt furniture for Established & Sons, which premiered at the London Design Festival in 2009, the Bouroullecs’ new lamp, produced in collaboration with Venini, the famous Venetian glassmaker, consists of a voluminous round glass structure supported by a delicate aluminium stick. The Breton-born brothers have also extended their Steelwood collection for Magis, with a stool and two tables.

Armchair for Bd Barcelona
Table for Venini
Armchair for Established & Sons
After two well-received exhibitions in the winter of 2009-2010 – Konstantin Grcic: Decisive Design at the Art Institute of Chicago and Design Real at the Serpentine Gallery in London – for Milan 2010 the industrial designer returns to basics. A wooden chair for Bd Barcelona, featuring a flip-up seat that allows stacking, complements last year’s Table_B. He has also produced a table made of mouth blown glass for Venini. The main body is conceived as a free-form bubble, on to which the table top is bonded. There is also an armchair for Established & Sons, comprising a tubular structure with loose foam upholstery.

Inside Out, indoor and outdoor furniture for Fermob
In 2007 Putman began to involve her daughter, Olivia, a landscape designer, in her design process. Inside Out, a collection for both indoor and outdoor use, takes its inspiration from one of the greatest aeronautical innovations: Concorde, the interior of which Putman designed. The seat of the chair from the Inside Out range is an interpretation of the aircraft’s safety belts, which have been turned into a weave material that is highly resistant and yet comfortable. 70/20 aluminium – a highly resistant alloy used in the aerospace industry – has been used to ensure structures are solid as well as light, enabling them to be easily moved between interior and exterior spaces.

The Invisibles sofas, armchairs and benches for Kartell
Yoshioka has produced a new series of designs for sofas, armchairs and benches that maintain the practical use-value of solid forms while being totally transparent – made possible by using the thinnest pieces of polycarbonate available.

Amplify lighting system for Swarovski Crystal Palace
For his fourth collaboration with Swarovski, Béhar has combined technology with the inherent qualities of crystal to create a new lighting arrangement. The design comprises a series of deceptively simple crystal-shaped paper shades, within which light is refracted from a real crystal, casting its patterns on the surface of the paper.

Sprinkle for Smart Car
Limited edition furniture and lighting
Sprinkle has been designed using a creative splashing and marking technique, including paint splatters and even the designer’s own handprint, to create a vividly coloured customised car. This free-style approach to design is continued in the car’s interior: the light-grey felt seats are liberally spotted with green, blue, red and yellow buttons and elements of the dashboard have been splashed with paint. Sachs will also be showing a new collection of limited-edition furniture and lighting in an exhibition titled Flawless/Imperfection at the Studio Visconti.

Vigna chair for Magis
Chair for Established & Sons
Gamper’s design for Magis is a bistro/café chair constructed from metal wire with a plastic seat for both outdoor and indoor use. For Established & Sons he has designed a wooden chair using traditional bentwood techniques. To coincide with these new products a selection of works showcased in his solo exhibition 100 Chairs in 100 Days at the Milan Triennale in November 2009 will be restaged at Nilufur, a commercial art and design gallery.

Continuing his fascination with the relationship between performance and fabrication, Tom Dixon is set to transform his booth at Superstudio Piu in Zona Tortona into a fully operational flash factory. Appropriately, this new series is titled Industry. Each piece can be either flat-packed or assembled on site by the Tom Dixon team. The installation follows how digital manufacture enables the designer to access global markets easily with fresh products. Industry includes: Void, a lighting object with a double wall spun construction available in solid copper, brass or stainless steel; Peg, a fully adaptable solid wood stackable café chair; and Offcut Bench, a continuation of the Offcut series, using the rough part of a log typically discarded in wood production.

Troy and Sparkling chairs for Magis
Forest of the United Crystals for Baccarat
The chair has always been the little black dress of product design. With its slender moulded seat and its dainty stiletto legs, Troy is perhaps the slimmest and most refined one yet. Wanders has also produced the ultra lightweight, semi-transparent Sparkling chair for Magis and for Baccarat he has designed a crystal collection titled Forest of the United Crystals.

Humberto and Fernando Campana
Esperança and Lirio lighting collections for Venini
Vases for Corsi Design
The dolls fabricated by the women of the village Esperança (the word means hope in English) received world recognition when the Campana brothers used them to form the upholstery of their Mutidão Chair in 2003. In collaboration with Venini, they have developed the Esperança collection, a group of large chandeliers, around 55cm wide, incorporating glass and figures based on the Brazilian fabric dolls. A further collection for Venini, Lirio, includes cocoon-shaped lights, constituted from a combination of rattan with either pink, aquamarine or green glass. The Campana brothers have also designed a new collection of vases for Corsi Design, each of which fuses a flexible resin with natural materials.
