British historian Simon Schama has joined the Financial Times as a contributing editor. Internationally acclaimed Schama will write regularly on a wide variety of topics for the FT and for FT Weekend.
Financial Times editor Lionel Barber said, “I am delighted that Simon Schama is joining the Financial Times. He is one of the most elegant and versatile writers in the English language, a master historian who can turn his talents to the arts, popular culture and bonne cuisine. He will be a terrific addition – in particular to our FT Weekend offering.”
Simon Schama was educated at Christ’s College, Cambridge. He taught history at both Cambridge and Oxford before lecturing in Art History and History at Harvard between 1980 and 1993. He is now University Professor of Art History and History at Columbia University in New York.
He has been internationally acclaimed for his best-selling and award-winning books including: Patriots and Liberators (1977); Citizens (1989) and Rembrandt’s Eyes (1999). He has also written and hosted several pieces of work for television broadcasters BBC and PBS, including the 15-part BBC documentary series “A History of Britain”, first broadcast in 2000, and a series aired in conjunction with the 2008 presidential election: “The American Future: A History”.
