Don’t be put off by the composer’s thorny reputation: Schoenberg’s biblical epic, left incomplete when he died, is a theatrical statement of earth-shaking proportions, featuring the Golden Calf, a sexual orgy and Moses’ smashing of the tablets.

Welsh National Opera’s new production, conducted by Lothar Koenigs, stars John Tomlinson as the Old Testament prophet, but this is very much an ensemble piece: expect WNO’s splendid chorus to steal the limelight. The production comes to London’s Royal Opera House on July 25 and 26.
