Manchester Business School on the hunt for next director

Michael Luger is to retire as director of Manchester Business School after six and a half years. He will take up a broad portfolio of interests across the university, including research with the Centre for Infrastructure Development.

A permanent head of the school will be appointed early in 2014. From September 2013 until the appointment, Fiona Devine, head of the School of Social Sciences at the university, will become Acting Head of the business school.

American by nationality, and educated at Princeton and Berkeley, Prof Luger was an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina before moving to Manchester. His US connections served Manchester Business School well. The school launched its executive-style Global MBA programme in Miami in 2010.

Prof Luger lists the opening of the campus in Miami, one of the hot cities for Executive MBA programmes in the US because of its proximity to Latin America, as one of the highlights of his tenure. “We have made considerable progress towards meeting our strategic goals in the opening of our Miami Centre and in securing agreement for a major redevelopment project that will see the construction of exciting new facilities for our staff and students in Manchester.”
