The first Blondie album since 2003’s The Curse of Blondie springs nimbly to life with “D-Day”, Debbie Harry snarling about love over vibrant electro-rock. Spirits rise: can New York’s finest turn the clock back 40 years? Sadly not it turns out.
Momentum slows with “Mother”, a pale retread of their 1999 hit “Maria”, and disappears entirely with the insipid reggae of “The End The End”. Harry does her best, variously singing in Spanish, French and with a Jamaican accent, but the old magic makes only fleeting reappearances, as when Harry ingeniously rhymes “seduction” and “chewing gum” in “Words in My Mouth”.
