Dusty Springfield: The Magic of Dusty Springfield

Album gives a good overview of the singer’s career

Dusty Springfield is the point of origin for the Adele/Amy Winehouse/Duffy tradition of white British female soul stars. The Magic of Dusty Springfield is a good overview of her career, including a DVD of television appearances – in one, from 1979, the singer appears in a mourning veil to explain why poor ticket sales led to a tour being cancelled – and a disc of theme songs she recorded for now-forgotten 1960s films.

The songs, with Springfield’s clear strong tones framed by handsomely orchestrated arrangements, have dated better than the films.
