The ghostly acoustic atmosphere of Angel Olsen’s previous album Half Way Home fades away on the follow-up, replaced by chunky Breeders-style riffs (“Forgiven/Forgotten”), countrified garage-rock (“Hi-Five”) and a mesmerising Leonard Cohen impersonation (“White Fire”).
The music is stronger but the US singer-songwriter remains an enigmatic presence, her vocals introspective and pensive. “I wasted my time with you on my mind,” she sings in one breath, and then the next: “I don’t know anything but I love you.” Like its riddling title, Burn Your Fire for No Witness leaves us wanting to find out more.
