The Manchester-based saxophonist takes his main inspiration from the meditative riffs, spiritual lines and Hindu mysticism that informed John Coltrane’s later work – he died in 1967 – and that featured strongly in the music of his late widow, Alice.
Birchall’s clubby remake is somewhat simplified – he strips back the polythythms and beefs up the riffs – but his tone is heartfelt and harpist Rachel Gladwin and Corey Mwamba on vibes add authentic textures – by the CD’s end, you can almost smell incense.
