The centrepiece of Vijay Iyer’s ECM debut is the ten movement “Mutations Suite”, a rigorous blend of improvisation and composition featuring contemporary chamber music strings, atmospheric electronica and the composer’s sparse piano.
Here, motifs gradually change shape or are fractured by sudden infusions of angularity and single repeated notes support scatters of piano or a swirl of strings. The CD is bookended by Iyer’s wistful ruminations on solo piano, “Vuln Pt 2” adds layers of electronica and every track confirms his authoritative grasp of dynamics and sound.
