William Rand is an assistant professor of marketing at the Robert Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, in the US.

He is also director of research for the Centre for Complexity in Business, focusing on the application of complex systems techniques to business applications and management science.

Prof Rand has used computer models to help understand various complex systems such as suburban sprawl, traffic patterns and financial systems. His current research analyses the diffusion of information across social media platforms.

He earned his doctorate in computer science from the University of Michigan in 2005.
