As this summer’s transfer season gets under way, the use of statistics is transforming the world’s biggest sport. Simon Kuper writes about Football’s hidden revolution.
The following CGI images are several more of Giles Revell's remarkable artistic representations of statistics taken from other football matches. Some look like objects from the natural world - fish, coral, flowers - others like busy urban skylines. Like the images in our feature, they depict all sorts of data, from geographical distribution of play during a match to the direction and frequency of passes between players. In general the spikes and columns represent a particular event, be it a goal, pass, tackle, throw-in or corner kick. A number of the images remain works in progress.
