Exhibitions: Jacqueline Wilson, “Daydreams and Diaries”

Born in Bath in 1945, Jacqueline Wilson has enjoyed a career crammed with distinctions: the teenage magazine Jackie was named after her when she worked there as a young journalist; she has sold more than 35 million books in the UK alone; volunteers for Battersea Cats & Dogs Home; was Children’s Laureate from 2005-2007; and became a Dame in 2008.

This year marks the publication of her 100th book, a centenary that brings with it an exhibition at the V&A Museum of Childhood celebrating her life and work – complete with a facsimile of her childhood bedroom.

The exhibition, which opens next month, features family photos (above), childhood diaries, rough artwork by her longtime illustrator Nick Sharratt, some of her own favourite books as well as postcards and letters sent by fans. There is even a mock-up of Wilson’s study – and the chaise-longue from which she writes.

Opening at the same time is a stage adaptation at the Rose Theatre in Kingston of Hetty Feather, Wilson’s story of a Victorian foundling (right) in search of her real family. Adapted for the stage by award-winning script writer Emma Reeves and directed by Olivier Award-nominated director Sally Cookson, Hetty Feather will tour the UK after its debut run in Kingston.
