Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is about youthful genius exploited by gain-hungry grownups. If you remember Meatballs 1 you know the setup. But if you remember Meatballs 1 you probably, as they say of the Sixties, didn’t live through it.
Here is another happy, psychedelic digimation for kids, its two-dimensional characters delirium’d into 3D. As the boy inventor goes to work for the evil boffin, in an otherworldly laboratory populated by animated foodstuffs, “fast food” has its defining hour. Hamburgers eat you unless you’re swift to fight back. Tacos surge to the attack like wide-grinning bulldozers. A “sub-whale” is not a tautologous marine species but a Subway sandwich resembling Moby Dick.
Amazingly, given the combination of Melvillean invocation and marketing plugs, the name Starbucks doesn’t feature once. That usually unstoppable company must have fallen asleep in the crow’s nest of the good ship Product Placement.
