Billy Hart Quartet: One is the Other

Nuanced acoustic subtleties hold sway on this set that is full of elastic rhythms, rich harmonies and intense interplay

The extended solo piano counterpoint that opens this second album from drummer Billy Hart’s longstanding sax and rhythm quartet soon establishes that, on this set, nuanced acoustic subtleties hold sway.

When Hart finally enters, he firms up the pulse with a few precise splashes behind Ben Street’s firm, resonant and riffing double bass.

It’s a lovely album, warm, varied and full of elastic rhythms, rich harmonies and intense interplay featuring Mark Turner’s devious, whispy and emotional tenor sax lines twisting round pianist Ethan Iverson’s imaginative support.
