The eight albums John Coltrane recorded for Atlantic, made between Jan 1959 and May 1961, include the saxophonist’s masterclass in modern harmony Giant Steps, and his first forays into modal jazz with My Favourite Things.
This collection adds alternative masters, an informative essay and a CD of rehearsal takes that reveal Coltrane’s working practices.
This is a budget re-issue of a collection first released in 1995, and it remains an ‘essential text’, but, more importantly, Coltrane’s on muscular form making great music that still sounds fresh.
