Kenny Garrett performs at such consistently high levels that his hip melodies, intense expressionism and rhythmic discipline can easily be taken for granted. Yet he remains jazz’s lead saxophonist, and, as his latest sax and rhythm CD shows, is a canny composer of built-for-purpose themes.
This set of originals, one of his best in recent years, includes propulsive swingers fuelled by a road-tested band, a lovely ballad and a sprinkling of tributes – a Spanish-tinged spiritual pentatonic for Chick Corea; a sly calypso for Sonny Rollins.
