Photographer Chen Wei (born 1980), who lives and works in Beijing, is one of the new generation of Chinese artists whose work explores the place of the individual in a rapidly evolving China.
The photograph “Other Postman”, in which darkness encroaches on a solitary figure, is one of those on show in Slumber Song, Chen’s first solo exhibition in Britain (see slideshow below). It forms one of a series of highly choreographed and often unsettling images of installations, often composed of everyday objects and settings, which the artist sketches, composes and then photographs.
‘Chen Wei: Slumber Song’ is at Ben Brown Fine Arts, London, until June 5. benbrownfinearts.com
