A blend of soulful alto sax and South Indian inflection

In Hinduism, Samdhi, the Sanskrit word for twilight, represents transition and a reflection on the past.

Saxophonist Mahanthappa captures the essence with a forward-looking blend of soulful alto sax, South Indian inflection and nervous beats. Micro-tonal drones morph into the blues, jittery sax is enhanced by electronics and guitarist David Gilmore delivers splayed chords with a rocky edge. Two drummers add spice and drive and there is a cheesy finale “For all the Ladies”. The fusion is genuine, the mix singular, and it mostly works.
