Alan Gilbert, 47, is an American conductor and violinist who has been music director of the New York Philharmonic since 2009. Earlier this year, under his direction, the orchestra completed a winter tour that took in Taipei, Tokyo and Seoul.

Jacket by Richard James
This is bespoke. One of my go-to looks is jeans and a blazer. While I do have bespoke jackets that are more constructed, I also love an unstructured tailored jacket. I’m pretty conservative when it comes to colour – and accessorise with colourful pocket squares. My conductor’s uniform, also by James, is modelled after a horseracing jockey jacket. I have tails and a black suit from Charvet.

Shirt by Charvet
Again, bespoke: once I had shirts made, my standards went up. The way I dress doesn’t scream fashion, but you get used to certain details. I spend a lot of time in France and visit Charvet when in town. For my shirts, I enjoy a softer, Neapolitan shoulder. I have my initials monogrammed beneath my left rib cage but on my concert shirts, they’re out of the way on the left elbow.

Jeans by J Brand
I’ll wear jeans to rehearsals and when I don’t need to be too formal. I always buy darker washes with a tapered leg and slimmer fit. Because I’m used to that “neat” look, I like my jeans to look tailored as well.

This is a simple woven, unstructured fold-over tie. When I’m conducting, I wear a white bow tie.

This is a Classique 5157 in yellow gold with a sapphire case back. It was a gift from Breguet, a sponsor of the Philharmonic, after my first concert as music director.

These came from my favourite eyeglass store in the world, Lunettes du Jura, in Omotesando, Tokyo. I picked them up when we were on tour in Asia.

Cufflinks
These were designed by my cellist wife Kajsa [William-Olsson]. Her second cousin, jewellery designer, Niklas Ejve, made them out of steel.

Bracelet
Also very personal: Kajsa and I were on our way to dinner in Hamburg and we passed a crafts store where you could buy jewellery or have jewellery made; we had time to kill so we stopped in and made matching leather bracelets. It was like a first date, although it was only a month ago.
