There’s a strong after-hours vibe to this acoustic recording from these four long-term acquaintances with roots in ’80s fusion.
Bob James’ sparse piano and canny, understated arrangements hover between sentiment and bite, and an unusually restrained Steve Gadd swishes sensitively on drums.
But with David Sanborn’s keening vibrato and fruity-toned alto sax adding zest and note-perfect bassist James Genus vigour, the slow-burning album catches you unawares.
Sanborn is in full cry on the rondo-like “Follow Me” and “Don’t Blame Me”; “Deep in the Weeds” is a funky finale.
