Young men in Sarajevo

The photograph above, taken two years ago, shows four men in their twenties sitting on a bench outside the housing estate where they live in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is part of “Overnight Generation”, a series of photographs by Venezuelan-born photographer Italo Morales.

The series formed his final project for an MA in photojournalism and documentary photography at the London College of Communication. Morales describes it as his “tribute” to the generation who grew up during the 1992-96 siege of Sarajevo – the longest siege in modern history.

The work is featured in FreshFaced + WildEyed 2013, an exhibition showcasing the work of 22 of the best new UK photography graduates, which opened this week at the Photographers’ Gallery in London. A dedicated micro-site features the finalists’ work as well as online galleries of previous years’ participants.
